"Feeling like I mattered"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Radiography services Craigavon Area Hospital / Urology

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2016. Following treatment I never looked back. That is until my kidneys showed signs of damage in May'22 when I was admitted as an emergency patient to Craigavon Area Hospital. To my horror I had to have tubes called Nephrostomies inserted into each kidney. To be honest, I cannot remember getting them in, as I was so unwell both mentally and physically. However, I can remember how I felt when I saw the tubes and bags hanging by my side and the only thought was one of absolute horror. I was not prepared for the journey ahead and felt completely at a loss.

The reason I am writing this is that now 9 months later things are so much better and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The reason for this is due to the brilliant aftercare that I have received from the staff of CAH .My thanks and appreciation extend to Angie, the counsellor of Cancer Focus (based at CAH), Sharon, the Cancer Nurse and Dr Haynes, Urologist and Dr McConville,Urologist. I also would like to thank Dr Khan for his reassuring kindness when I got overwhelmed with everything in May and Dr Buddha for his reassuring smile. My heartfelt thanks go to the Radiotherapy nurses (esp. Lynn) and Dr McConville who  in my opinion each deserve a gold medal. The nurse team of the radiology dept,CAH renewed my faith in humanity during probably one of the lowest points of my life. At each of my appointments they are upbeat, informative and reassuring. I cannot commend them enough.

So the next time we all talk about how the NHS is on its knees, let's just remember these absolute angels who work there .They do a very hard and stressful job with very little recognition.

To conclude, I want to thank this page for allowing me to share my opinion. I also want to thank the entire staff of Craigavon Hospital from the Porters, Receptionist, Cleaners, Nurses, Ambulance staff, Carers, Drs, Urology team and Consultants for all they do.  I felt like I mattered and was not just a number.
