"Lack of Patient Care and discharged too soon"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Mum was admitted to Hairmyres Hospital and received poor care from the minute she arrived via A&E (she is in her 80's). From significant lack of communication, basic care needs not being met, being refused pain medication that she was prescribed then being discharged early to free up a medical bed. Family weren't informed prior to collecting her that she had fallen following OT assessment. Due to this mum fell again before she even got into her own front door and family had to urgently purchase a wheelchair to allow her care needs to be met in the house.  We feel this was a failed discharge, and she should have been readmitted, but because of her poor care can understand why she refused.

Family have now spent the day trying to organise care in the community.

Dear Charlie1*

I am sorry to read that your mum received a poor standard of care whilst in the Emergency department and that you feel she was discharged too quickly. I would like to look into the concerns you have raised and hope you will contact patient affairs so that I can review your mum’s care.

01355 585325 or email PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

I see that your mum declined to be readmitted due to the poor care that she received and you as a family are sourcing care support in the community. My sincere apologies that your mum has not received the standard of care that I would expect. I hope that we can discuss your mum’s care needs and offer support with her ongoing needs.

please pass on my apologies to your mum and hope to hear from you soon.

Lise
