My husband has spent the last 6 weeks in Inverclyde Royal Hospital. He is 66 years old and has Asperger's so it has been a very traumatic & stressful time for him.
He is a vegetarian and also has food intolerances which he constantly had to remind them of. They gave him meat & fish based meals on a regular basis (being told that some vegetarians eat fish) and also meals that contained onions which is one of the items he has an intolerance to. He was either given a slice of toast as a replacement or frequently went without altogether.
He was also given a sausage casserole one day; a corned beef sandwich, fish and chips. When he refused unsuitable food he was told he was too fussy and should stop moaning. He managed to speak to someone from the catering department who apologised but nothing changed and he continued to receive unsuitable meals.
He also has problems cutting up his food but got no help so was surviving on soft food which he could eat with a spoon. I was unable to visit him to take him any food due to my own ill health. I am disgusted that he was being treated in this way and very upset. His mental health was suffering due to being in hospital for over 6 weeks but made even worse by not getting decent meals.
They also managed to lose his clothes - a pair of trousers, a vest and a top. The staff blamed him for losing the items!
All in all, a very stressful time for both of us especially as he has now been given a diagnosis of Parkinson's.
