"Morning routine help for a tetraplegic"

About: Adult Disability Services / Complex Care Team

(as a service user),

In 2011 I had a skydiving accident and broke my neck, leaving me with a C5/6 spinal cord injury. Since then I have needed help in the mornings to get me showered, dressed, hoisted into my wheelchair etc. I have carers who help me with these things, but I am also doubly incontinent and need nursing assistance to help me with aspects of this.

Upon moving to Northern Ireland from England 2 years ago, this need has been fulfilled by the nurses of the Southern Trust Complex Care Team, who visit me at 7:00 am for around 2 hours every other day, whether it be mid-week or the weekend. The early start is extremely important to me, because my overall routine takes such a long time and I need to be finished at a reasonable time in order to start work or (at the weekend) participate in family activities as I am married with two kids.

Despite the early hour, the nurses always turn up bright and enthusiastic, and are good-humoured yet professional. It is no exaggeration to say that I would be lost without them.

Thank you Complex Care Team!
