"30 years of being a Patient"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Fracture Clinic The Ulster Hospital / Pain Clinic The Ulster Hospital / Ward 27 (Mental Health)

(as a service user),

Unfortunately I have been in and out of the UHD over the last 30 years. I've been on Life Support and thanks to all the amazing staff there, I'm alive to tell the tale!

At the moment I feel strongly that the nurses, doctors and all the support services need a more positive story! I'm just so grateful that the lovely staff at the UHD have repeatedly saved my life. I have addiction issues, chronic pain and generally bad mental health. I'm doing amazingly well at the moment! I feel that it's time I gave something back to the wonderful staff there, whose morale is without doubt very low. Do you have a Patient Committee or whatever they call it these days? Could someone contact me and suggest how I could become more involved with the Hospital? I would be delighted to be at your service.

Thank you doesn't cover the intense Gratitude I have for all of u! πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•

Good evening Lived Experience Officer

Thank you for taking the time to share of your positive experience of support from our mental health professionals. I will ensure to pass your lovely feedback on to the team. I am also really pleased to hear that you are doing so well. I have contacted the manager of peer advocacy services within mental health and will get back to you to answer your query about getting involved.

Thank you again

Thank you for taking the time to get in contact, Lived Experience Officer,

It is always good to hear that the people we provide care for over the years have positive feedback on our services. Although the journey with a long term condition, such as chronic pain, is hard and challenging, being able to support people like yourself is why we do the job we do.

I will pass your feedback onto the team.

It is always beneficial to have expert patients (people) like yourself keen to be involved in future projects.

Hi Lived Experience Officer

Please accept my apologies in the delay in getting this information to you. I have spoken to our peer advocacy service. They advise to first complete the self-advocacy course before enrolling in the OCN-accredited peer advocacy workshop. These services are provided by the Recovery College. Those who wish to provide advocacy on the wards must follow a procedure and submit an application through volunteer services. This would occur only if and when a position became vacant.

The Recovery College can also be reached at 028 9041 3872 or via email at recovery.college@setrust.hscni.net. The staff are more than happy to talk you through the process in more detail and answer any questions.

I hope this information is helpful. I do hope it is the start of what I hope will be an amazing and valuable experience to you and others.

Best wishes
