"Wonderful doctor"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Emergency Surgical Unit (EMSU)

(as a service user),

I’ve come across Dr  Kennedy a couple of times in the Emergency Surgical Unit (EmSU) of Antrim Area Hospital. I think he is an excellent doctor, it’s obvious that he really cares about his patients. Jack is very approachable with a lovely way about him. He patiently answered the long list of queries I had about my complicated case on two occasions for me. Please never lose that wonderful, rare trait because it really makes a patient feel cared for and have a much more positive experience during a difficult period of their lives. I have no medical background but it is clear that he is also very knowledgeable in his field. Antrim Area Hospital are very lucky to have him, thank you for helping me and being a wonderful doctor!!!

FYI – my very bruised right arm from IV cannula damage turned into superficial thrombophlebitis as the vein on that wrist popped up 3 weeks post-Op. GP sent me to A&E where a blood clot was ruled out but I was told the vein needed treatment or I would get a blood clot. In the printouts the A&E doctor gave me on the condition it listed high temperature/fever as a symptom of the condition so perhaps that was the source of my infection 2 weeks post-Op! Hopefully you’ll not get another patient as unlucky as me but just in case it helps someone else, thought I’d mention it!

Hi E.L.L.

My name is Helen Davis and I work as an advanced nurse practitioner in EMSU.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your very positive experience. Unfortunately Jack is one of our trainee doctors on a rotational programme so he has moved on however I have already forwarded your story to him and he was delighted. Jack certainly has excellent communication skills and was an asset to our team, hopefully his training brings him back soon!

I'm sorry you have developed a complication from your cannula site and hope it is well settled now. We have a recording system to check on all the patients cannulas in the inpatient wards but I will ask staff to be particularly vigilant with unexplained fevers.

Regards

Helen
