"Lack of pain relief and care planning"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Paediatric Assessment Unit (Children's Assessment Unit)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to the children's assessment unit at 4:00pm. She had tonsillitis, had been prescribed antibiotics by GP in the morning but wasn't able to swallow her own saliva.  She was in pain and thirsty.

She was put into a triage room where she was assessed by the nurses promptly. She was given ice lollies which by the second ice lolly had really improved her sore throat and she was able to swallow. At 8:00pm the senior doctor, who was really lovely, came and assessed her. They were happy to send her home if my daughter was able to drink. They asked if my daughter had received any analgesia or antibiotics - she had received nothing. From this conversation it was suggested my daughter was to receive medication.

At 9:00ish a support worker had came in to see if we were ok. I'd asked about analgesia and a plan. I was told the Doctors were doing the handover and we would find out soon.

My daughter, who had been up all day, was exhausted, up to this point was sitting in a chair. I decided to use the trolley which was in the room so she could lie down. A nurse came to check on her about 10:00pm Still no analgesia was given. No blanket or pillow was offered for her lying on the trolley.

The night doctor came in at 23:30,  happy to send my daughter home. I stated to the doctor my daughter had been in the ward for 7 1/2hrs and had not received any analgesia, antibiotics and was sleeping with no cover or pillow.  Their response was the best care she would receive would be at home.

I woke my daughter up and took her home where she cried like a whimpering animal because she was tired and sore. She went to sleep without any antibiotics because she was too tired and too sore to swallow.

I am very disappointed with the service my daughter received. Working in the acute sector  myself I know first hand what pressures staff and the service are under. 7 1/2 hours with no pain relief or antibiotics is very poor service for anyone in my view, never mind a child.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with feedback. I am sorry that your overall experience was not a positive one. It would be helpful if you are happy to e-mail me (sue.danby@nhs.scot) your child's name so we can look in a bit more detail about this event so that we can aim to improve our service. I hope your daughter is making a good recovery now.

Kind Regards

Sue Danby
