"Elective surgery and rushed out"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Elective admissions (CEAW) 4 south Craigavon Area Hospital / General Surgery Craigavon Area Hospital / Theatres

(as a service user),

I was in for surgery which I had been waiting a long time for, I was brought to the elective ward in CAH around 10am and was not seen by a staff nurse until half 3. I heard the phone which was theatre’s ringing for me to come down. I was then rushed to get ready while getting my admission done although I was there from 10am that’s over  5 hours waiting and not been seen other than a doctor to sign forms.

I went down for my surgery and theatre and recovery staff where amazing as always. Can’t fault them. The only thing was after my surgery I had not spoke to a doctor on how it went and what was to happen next.

I was then brought back to elective ward where I had to stay the night. The next morning I had been approached around 6:25 in the morning saying can I get a lift home as they need my bed for 7am for another patient.I had to get ready and leave, I did not get offered breakfast I got handed my discharge letter and left. I had to wait for my lift then at the front of the hospital. I still was not seen by a doctor for discharge everything was done yes but no communication towards me.

I know the hospitals are busy but I felt like nobody had time for me on the ward I never really got spoken too other than the health care assistant who was brilliant. I feel like timing for surgery’s should be better laid out I don’t think a patient should be giving a bed and then kicked out after surgery that early in the morning when the whole ward is still sleeping for another patient… at least until breakfast was giving and a doctor had spoken to them.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to respond to your recent experience in Elective Ward.

Due to bed pressures unfortunately Elective Admission Ward does not have enough compacity to facilitate the numbers of admissions required on a daily basis. this is not ideal and nor is it how we wish to deliver patient care but in order to ensure all elective patients receive their surgery or procedure we have no alternative facilities currently.

As ward sister I apologies for the poor communication between staff and yourself on the day of surgery, I have raised this at staff meeting. I hope you are recovering well from your surgery.

Kind regards

Nichola McClenaghan
