"I’m ultra-cured, ultrafine (a poem)"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

“I’ve got a rash.”

“Allergy: try tablets”

“I’m covered in spots.”

“Eczema: try steroid cream”

“My skin is itchy.”

“Psoriasis: try coal tar”

“My skin is scaly.”

“Lichen planus: go to hospital.”

I feel like a leper unclean.

I really don’t want to be seen.

Scared for my body. Full of doubt.

I’ve no confidence to go out.

Wow! The diagnosis is right.

The doctors have now seen the light.

Photo biology

will solve my malady.

And I will not be such a sight.

Thirty sessions with a head shield

And my poor old body was healed.

Ultra violet made me shine

I’m ultra-cured, ultrafine.

I’m no longer red and spotted.

My husband is right besotted.

It took a year I must confess.

But now I thank the NHS.

Dear melw23,

Firstly, apologies for the delay in responding to you, this has been due to other commitments within the department.

My name is Mary, I'm the charge nurse in the dermatology/photobiology department and I wanted to say thank you for leaving your lovely feedback.

It's good to hear your story, from how you felt to begin with and what you went through to get where you are now. I'm pleased to hear that your skin has settled down and you now feel "ultrafine" and are happy with the results.

Your fabulous poem has been shared with the whole team in the dermatology/photobiology department and we would all like to say thank you so much for your feedback, we wish you all the best in the future, and we hope you continue to "shine".

Kind Regards

Mary

Hi Mary and team

I'm glad you liked my story. All the hospital staff were wonderful. The frustration was the long delay in diagnosis by the GP practice, but I think Lichen Planus may be fairly rare.

I have just been discharged from Ninewells as I fell and broke my hip. Staff were wonderful and I gave them a poem too.

Best wishes
