"Totally unacceptable during what is a very serious scan"

About: Causeway Hospital / Maternity Unit Causeway Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I attended my twenty week anatomy scan with my husband. There were two members of staff taking the scan. On showing the baby's eyes on the scan, one referred to the image as creepy. I found this statement completely inappropriate and unprofessional. I wish now I had stopped the scan at that moment as it was totally unacceptable during what is a very serious scan. It also seemed like a tick exercise and not overly thorough. I did not leave with any confidence in the scan. Compared to my previous experience with the lady who usually takes the scan, I found her extremely professional and knowledgeable.

Dear Mumofbaby,

My name is Barbara Strawbridge and I am the Lead Midwife for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Causeway Hospital. I can only apologise for this inappropriate behaviour and will report back to our Radiology Department who carry out the antenatal anomoly scans for our service, so they can further investigate the incident and share your feedback with their staff. It was not the professional attitude or behaviour we expect from any Trust employee and it is important that they receive this feedback so they can reflect and learn from your experience. We do take your comments very seriously and will strive to learn from your experience so the care provided in future is kind and compassionate and language used in future is appropriate and professional.

Once again I apologise on behalf of the Radiology Department staff who carried out your scan and will ensure appropriate sharing and learning is cascaded. If you wish to discuss your experience further please do not hesitate to contact me directly by telephoning the maternity unit and asking for me directly.

Meantime can I congratulate you on your pregnancy and wish you a positive experience for the remainder of your pregnancy and birth.

Kind regards

Barbara Strawbridge

Lead Midwife for Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Causeway Hospital
