"High quality care but difficult to arrange admission"

About: Aberdeen Health and Care Village / GMED Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology (Stomach and Gut)

(as a service user),

I was discharged from ward 104 yesterday and was very pleased with the high standard of care that I received while on the ward.

I was under the care of Dr McLemen and she listened carefully to how I was really to help formulate a plan to help me feel better again. The nursing staff and healthcare staff were all very caring and worked extremely hard to meet the needs of the patients on a busy ward.

It was also very helpful that my own consultant (Dr Moroni) came to have a discussion with myself prior to my discharge onto how to formulate a plan into dealing with my slow colon and also difficulties with my PEG tube.

My only concern that I have was the difficulty it was to get me admitted to hospital. I was very aware that due to the vomiting that I would not get better at home. The GP at out of hours was very good and kept phoning departments to arrange my admission but kept being refused and to try another department.

The GP contacted Ward 104, Ward 101, Surgical Receiving Unit and Emergency Department and initially no department was willing to take on my case. He was persistent and continued to call Ward 101 and Ward 104 and finally my case was accepted.

The doctor stated that this sort of "bureaucracy" can often happen between departments. He did also ask me which ward would normally take on my case in a similar situation (ward 101, 104). Thankfully from the GP being persistent, I was admitted to the correct ward but this does worry me if further admissions are needed.

Anyway the care that I received in hospital was of a high standard. I just have some concerns about how difficult it was to be admitted to hospital.

Good morning,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback.

I am so pleased to hear that your experience in Ward 104 was a pleasant one given the circumstances and I’m glad to hear that the team took good care of you during your stay.

I will be sure to share this feedback with Dr McLeman, Dr Moroni and the nursing staff in Ward 104. They will be delighted to hear this and it will bring some positivity to them during a time where there is so much pressure on the service.

I am very sorry to hear of the issues you and your GP encountered whilst trying to organise your admission to hospital. I would be keen to look into this and provide some feedback. If you would like to send me an email to lisa.fowler4@nhs.scot with your name and date of birth, I will look take this forward.

Thank you again and wishing you all the very best in your recovery.

Lisa

Thank you for taking the time to send us your post, following your experience with Out of Hours Primary Care Service (GMED). I am sorry to read that you were unwell, but equally happy to read that you are on the road to recovery following your discharge from Ward 104.

Following your triage to GMED, I am pleased that my colleague, I.e. the GP you were in contact with, was able to carry out the required assessment and initiate the necessary treatment plan. Unfortunately, I am unable to explain the difficult surrounding your hospital referral, but I am pleased to read that my colleague – the GP, was persistent, and got your admission referral to be accepted by Secondary Care.

GMED continue to work really hard, continue to review its processes to make sure we are consistent in the delivery of the best patient center care to all our patients, at the right time and at the right place.

It would be my pleasure to share this feedback with the GP colleague who carried out your assessment. Unfortunately, to identify the GP, I would need more information. If it’s not asking too much, I would appreciate if you can provide me with more information about your experience. We like to celebrate every feedback we receive and recognise our staff's hard work as this improves staff morale. If you wish to provide this information privately, you can email me at gram.gmedadmin@nhs.scot

Thank you once again for your feedback.

Regards,

Osi
