"Some things about orthopaedics"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

During the week I was taken into hospital after falling and hurting my hip.It turns out that I broke my hip and required a replacement. I have arthritis in my back and weak knees as it is, so it wasn't a major shock that something like this happened. During the day, the staff are generally helpful but I just feel overlooked at times. However, for the past two nights, there has been one staff member who really hasn't been great. They make me feel like I am a burden and I nearly have to explain what they have to do to help me when. I hate complaining but it really isn't good enough when patients require a certain level of care. This staff member even wears earphones when coming round to assist, which I find extremely unprofessional. Other than that, the ward is very clean and hygienic. The food is nice, however I don't eat a lot due to my medications which have affected my appetite.

Hello

I appreciate you taking the time to give your honest feedback. I am sorry to hear that you have broken your hip and even more sorry to hear how you feel about the care you have received on the orthopaedic ward. This is not the standard off care that is accepted in the ward. Staff are on duty to care for our patients. You are certainly not a burden. Staff should not be wearing earphones on duty and as ward sisters we will investigate this as it is unprofessional.

I hope you are recovering well from your fracture. If you are having a negative experience in a ward please be aware that you can ask to speak to the ward sister or nurse in charge and we will endeavor to resolve problems at ward level.

Kind regards

Joanne

Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback on orthopaedic ward. I am very sadden and disappointed to hear how your time was on the ward, this type of behavior is unprofessional and never acceptable at any time. I will discuss with the ward to sister to ensure that it never happens again.

I hope you continue to recovery well and get home soon.

Thank you

Hello

I wanted to follow up and give you feedback that a change has been made in relation to the member of staff. Again I am sorry that you were made to feel like this on the ward and would not want any patient to feel like this. I have discussed at ward meetings and no staff wear earphones on the ward. The staff member who was on night duty while you were in hospital was given additional training and I had weekly meetings with her with the aim to improve her professional conduct.

I will not accept that patients are treated like this on the orthopaedic ward.

Trust that you are recovered well.

Regards

ward sister
