Staff attitude
My dad has been waiting on a Gallbladder removal for over 18 months.
Since November, my dad has been in hospital 3 times. He has had x2 ERCP procedures which stop working after the 4 week mark. In December, my dad was admitted and was diagnosed with Pancreatitis, Jaundice, Sepsis and E.Coli due to ongoing issues with his gallbladder.
After a 13 day stay in hospital, my dad was discharged and at the start of January was promised by his consultant that my dad would have a 4-12 week wait for the Gallbladder removal.
My dad was then admitted at the end of January with suspected jaundice and severe pain. A CT scan revealed that my dad now has a perforated Gallbladder.
The surgeon we spoke to we found ageist and made it clear that due to my dad's age, he would have less priority for Gallbladder surgery than younger patients and that my family should not let our emotions cloud our judgement in relation to my dad's care.
The surgeon advised that if my dad received the surgery 18 months ago then these ongoing issues would not have occurred.
We feel that our dad is being failed by NHS Grampian and as a family we are extremely concerned and distressed that my dads gallbladder is now perforated and could burst at any time.
Currently we are being told that surgery will take place in at least 12 weeks, the same answer we were given at the start of January
My dads mental health is beginning to suffer, he has lost 4.5 stone in weight and has had pancreatitis twice, jaundice twice, sepsis and e.coli and yet NHS Grampian still do not appear to want to accept responsibility and act.
My dads mortality rate is increasing due to the perforated gallbladder.
A life is a life regardless of age and I find it appalling that there are staff members within NHS Grampian who are prioritising surgeries based on age as opposed to who requires the surgery most.
