"Unhappy with the treatment of my Dad"

My dad has been waiting on a Gallbladder removal for over 18 months.

Since November, my dad has been in hospital 3 times. He has had x2 ERCP procedures which stop working after the 4 week mark. In December, my dad was admitted and was diagnosed with Pancreatitis, Jaundice, Sepsis and E.Coli due to ongoing issues with his gallbladder.

After a 13 day stay in hospital, my dad was discharged and at the start of January was promised by his consultant that my dad would have a 4-12 week wait for the Gallbladder removal.

My dad was then admitted at the end of  January with suspected jaundice and severe pain. A CT scan revealed that my dad now has a perforated Gallbladder.

The surgeon we spoke to we found ageist and made it clear that due to my dad's age, he would have less priority for Gallbladder surgery than younger patients and that my family should not let our emotions cloud our judgement in relation to my dad's care.

The surgeon advised that if my dad received the surgery 18 months ago then these ongoing issues would not have occurred.

We feel that our dad is being failed by NHS Grampian and as a family we are extremely concerned and distressed that my dads gallbladder is now perforated and could burst at any time.

Currently we are being told that surgery will take place in at least 12 weeks, the same answer we were given at the start of January

My dads mental health is beginning to suffer, he has lost 4.5 stone in weight and has had pancreatitis twice, jaundice twice, sepsis and e.coli and yet NHS Grampian still do not appear to want to accept responsibility and act.

My dads mortality rate is increasing due to the perforated gallbladder.

A life is a life regardless of age and I find it appalling that there are staff members within NHS Grampian who are prioritising surgeries based on age as opposed to who requires the surgery most.

Dear Serviceuser93

We are very sorry that your dad is having such a miserable time whilst he waits for his surgery and can fully understand his, and the family's frustrations.

We would of course like to operate on everyone who is awaiting care, but with the current backlog for planned cases, which build up during the pandemic, it is simply not possible.

We have a clinical prioritization group which meets weekly and has the difficult job of deciding who, amongst all those who are waiting, can be given a date for their surgery.

If you would like us to look into your dad's case more closely please do get in touch. I can be contacted at linda.oldroyd@nhs.scot

In the meantime, if your dad's condition worsens he should contact his GP who can advise on the type of referral which is appropriate.

Again, we apologise for not being able to meet all the care needs for the people of Grampian at this time. However we are doing our very best to get through as many cases as possible including contracting out to the private sector and using other Health Boards.

Finally, we would never age discriminate a person's care.

I am sorry for the situation we all find ourselves in. Please, as I said, do get in touch. If we have your dad's details, and with his permission, we can look more closely at his case.
