About: General Practices in Grampian

(as a service user),

I have had ongoing vaginal bleeding since October 2022.  I am a patient at a medical practice in Grampian. At the beginning of my bleeding issue I was taken very seriously and quickly given blood test and physical exam appointments. I was referred for an urgent ultrasound but decided to go private for this scan due to the NHS waiting times which I do not have an issue with as I understand the pressures the NHS are under.

Since having this ultrasound and sending images to the practice I feel as though the doctors are no longer concerned about finding a real cause for the bleeding I am experiencing. They have assumed that it is a hormonal issue despite no real hormone testing being done and now I am still bleeding and suffering side effects from these hormone tablets that are making my daily life difficult, I am no longer coping.

I had a recent phone consultation where I told the Dr or nurse that these hormones were not stopping or improving my bleeding but simply giving me quite severe lightheadedness and nausea and felt completely ignored.  I was told to continue taking them and instead given a prescription for an anti-sickness medication. I feel completely ignored and hopeless at present, I am being left to deal with constant vaginal bleeding which is not only just emotionally and physically draining and exhausting but is also a financial burden due to regularly needing to buy menstrual products.

I understand that everyone who works in healthcare and the NHS are under extreme pressure but at what point do we stop allowing this to excuse poor quality of care? This entire situation has had an extreme impact on my mental health and my quality of life on the daily and I feel like I am just being passed pillar to post with no real progress being made.

Dear Watermk77,

Feeling that something isn’t right with your body is worrying enough without feeling you aren’t being listened to, and I'm sorry to hear about the impact this is having on your physical and mental health..

It would be helpful to be able to share this with directly with the GP practice so they can work with you to see what other support they can provide. Most of the GP Practices in Grampian are independently run and aren’t registered to respond to feedback received via Care Opinion. They don’t routinely access the feedback either so the practice won’t see this without it going straight to them.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, I can forward your story to them anonymously, but I’d need you to share the practice name with me directly. If you’d like me to do that I can be contacted on email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot or by text/phone: 07885720267. Help is also available to share your concerns with the GP Practice from the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). PASS are an independent service offering free and confidential advice and they can be contacted on 0800 917 2127, or for more information please go to www.patientadvicescotland.org.uk

Take care,

Kirsten
