"Chilling response to mental health crisis"

About: Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust

(as a service user),

I went to A&E  via ambulance after I had made a suicide attempt. I had previously attempted earlier in the year. I was taken to a mental health room in one of the A&E's this Trust uses for mental health emergencies.

I had already tried ringing the crisis line. They failed to pick up. They failed to return calls when messages were left. When i eventually got through to someone it was like they were reading off a crib sheet. They said they weren't a qualified professional. No empathy. When i told them I wanted to kill myself they told me  that if I really want to we cant stop you and almost immediately ended the call.

This Trust closed the mental health crisis hub very suddenly with no notice at all. It was a place you could go because going to A&E is known to increase risk because it is a terrible setting if you are in a mental crisis. They did this knowing the state of NHS A&E services- it was bad enough for those in crisis before yet alone now. The mental health team at this A&E were so dismissive of my distress and the things they said callous and told me that if I had really wanted to die I would have tried harder.

I was seen for 10 mins and no support was offered for home treatment team support. In fact no support was offered at all. My family were told they should look after me and call 999 again if I got worse. Worse than a suicide attempt.

I am on the waiting list for a psychiatrist and have been after already being assessed as needing urgent support. My GP says they cannot support me and it is the Trust's job to do this. I cant see how an NHS Trust that treats suicidal people so badly can be a safe place  I don't think these types of views have any place in the NHS but no one does anything to make them better.

We are very sorry to hear about this poor experience of our Crisis Single Point of Access (CSPA) and our A&E Liaison Service. We take mental health crisis very seriously and want our service users to have the best possible experience of services when they need urgent or emergency care. Please do contact our complaints team via feedback@candi.nhs.uk so we can follow up the poor experience described and be assured that we welcome feedback that helps us to improve our services. All calls to the CSPA are recorded for learning and development purposes and so we will be able to review and respond to poor practice if we have a little more information.

C&I recognises the distress caused to service users by the closure of the MHCAS service on our St Pancras Hospital site. We’re sorry we were unable to identify an alternative location at that time, despite much effort going into this. We are able to confirm that there is a commitment to re-opening the service in the autumn, as part of our Highgate Campus. Following another search and negotiation with other organisations, we are now also able to confirm re-opening the service at a site in Kentish Town whilst we wait for the new build. We will communicate the opening with service user groups as soon as we are able to take self-referrals which is expected within the next month.
