"I was in a serious condition as my body was shutting down"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Plastic Surgery & Burns Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Surgical HDU

(as the patient),

After being on holiday in Poland and having received medical treatment over there I was taken to A&E Aberdeen Royal Infirmary as was told to go there on my return. I was seen quickly then assessed in 208.

My wife was told to call my family as I was in a serious condition as my body was shutting down due to what looked like sepsis, I was unaware how serious my condition was and thought I was only going down to have my wadding changed that Poland had put in wound.

I was rushed down to surgery, my wife was told that there wasn't a guarantee I'd make it out of surgery. I was taken down to the theatre,  everyone was still very worried that my veins weren't working I still was very relaxed, eventually they found a vein and I was out to sleep.

I woke to find out I had a huge amount cut from my bottom due to Necrotising fasciitis (flesh eating disease) and all the way back to the bone of the anus, I was on morphine and in High Dependency Unit (HDU) where they were all amazing.

Two days later I required more surgery, for more debraiding of the bottom, this tile I also had a colostomy fitted due to preventing cross contamination for the wound, another 2 days and more surgery was given and a vac pump fitted.

This time I was sent to ward 206, fantastic helpful staff, so understanding and a very great emotional support, I even got to walk a little bit the first time in 6 days thanks to Ali (Nurse). I was in 206 for 4 days and the care was exceptional.

I was then sent for more surgery this time under the plastic surgeons as they were hopeful that the antibiotic regime I was on was working and they had stopped the spread and if so, reconstruction would start.

Thankfully when I awoke from the surgery 6 hours later, they had closed the wound and I was now in ward 214, still on a regime of antibiotics but I was on the way to recovery and alive.

The staff in 214 were so exceptional and had so much time to help with personal care, as I couldn't get up or sit as my wound couldn't have pressure on it. I was in ward 214 for 7 days.

I finally got out of hospital after being in for 2 weeks, I'm home and on the mend but have a lot to overcome and to come to terms with.
