"My sister is not kept securely on this "secure" ward"

About: Adult mental health / Dunnottar Ward

(as a relative),

I have fought now for a number of years to get my sister into a care setting for serious mental health issues cause by crack cocaine addiction. After successfully getting her into Dunnotar Ward in December, we were then hopeful this was the start of something positive for her.

Our hope was short lived only 4 days later when she managed to escape from this secure ward. She was then captured by the police, who almost knocked down my mothers door in the process, before locating her at her own address. She was returned to the ward and then there was a period of 2 weeks where we were seeing real progress before she escaped again due to a bank worker on the ward allowing her to pass a secure door.

In the past 10 days, despite escaping twice already, she has now managed to escape a further 3 times. Dunnotar Ward we are advised is a secure ward yet they seem unable to contain my sister who is clearly a flight risk and we now have no faith in what they are doing there.

Dear Branwf66

Thank you for sharing your story about your sisters time in the Dunnottar ward. We are grateful for you taking the time to share these experiences as it allows us to improve our services. I am sorry to hear of your experiences and your ongoing concerns and worries about your sister, although positive to hear she was improving whilst in the ward for a couple of weeks.

It would be helpful if we could discuss this further, and perhaps for me to explain to you about our wards locked door policy, as Dunnottar is not classed as a secure ward. I apologise if this has not been explained properly to you.

I wonder if you could contact me at julia.wells@nhs.scot please and I can arrange a suitable time to speak with you. If you do not wish to contact me, I do assure you that we will be exploring this story further and looking to make improvements around our communication in relation to our locked door policy.

Kind Regards

Julia
