I tried to order a repeat inhaler for my child who is asthmatic and has had previous attacks, usually in cold weather. I had tried ordering through the medication service provided by surgery. I tried for 7 days and then gave up. I called surgery several times and kept being directed to same number so I went to surgery today.
Initially the receptionist seemed ok and understanding when I told them my child had been to hospital and his inhalers were changed in November and has since run out. The receptionist looked at the record and said they have no record of hospital letter and can't issue anything without this. I understand the procedure as work in the NHS myself. So I went back home and brought the letter for a copy to be taken.
I was then told that I would have to wait for 48 hours for the medication to be changed onto my child's record before being issued. I explained that I was very desperate especially for the reliever - I had the empty device with me . I asked if I could get that while awaiting the changes. The receptionist said I would have to wait, and started asking me why I left it so late. I explained that I have been trying to order for the past 7 days, called 111 who told me to call my GP, so what else was I supposed to do?
I had to come here twice today went and brought the letter clearly stating what needs to be issued and even then I feel I am being being blamed? Meanwhile my child has no meds and is having to use his aunts inhaler for now.
I think this could have been handled differently. The receptionist could have seen the seriousness of the situation and informed one of the clinicians to issue medication while awaiting medication changes. The letter clearly states what medication needs to be issued. The hospital had already changed the medication and all that was required was for someone to add this to the record. It feels like my child's asthma is not being taken seriously and despite highlighting my fear and concern to the receptionist this was not taken seriously.
I don't want to have to take my child to A&E for something that can be prevented. It only takes 2 minutes to issue a prescription.
