"My daughters treatment"

About: General Practices in Grampian Royal Cornhill Hospital / Adult mental health

(as a relative),

This started before covid lock down . My daughter called surgery asking for help from mental health reasons . Was told it was normal for her age group to be feeling depressed. She called again and was given no help even though suicidal thoughts and eating disorder. Same doctor both times

Went to university and spent 3 months locked inside to pandemic March 2021, admitted to Cornhill after breakdown . My daughter was unrecognisable. I could not see her due to pandemic but had several calls daily. She keeps wanting the staff to talk to her but instead more medication. After 4 weeks and a court hearing she was detained by law. 3 days later a call to me saying she was discharged. After discharge we had no help, no consultant, no visits, no advice and she was completely glazed over with medication.

I lost count to how many times I emailed and called and was basically told there was no staff. GP wouldn’t help with medication so with family help we started to reduce and come off it. My daughter was able to function and not feel numb. She described her being as like a robot. Still mentally challenged we tried to access Counseling and again doors were closed.

We paid for private Counsiling which is still ongoing. My daughter went to try university at Glasgow again and had an accident sailing. She was in a lot of pain in her lower back which then moved to her leg. She asked GP for help and xray and was told it was siatica. She did what was told and was still several weeks later in chronic pain and again was told she was too young for it to be anything serious.

She was back in Glasgow and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. She was unable to walk or pass water. MRI scans showed a condition which requires surgery. There was a 18 month to 2 year waiting list. After 9 months of chronic pain and after her time in Cornhill and mentally physically we simply couldn’t wait for that so had to go private again which we shouldn’t have to do. The consultant was fantastic and did say if this had been picked up earlier physio may have fixed it but it was too late.

July 2022 surgery and we are still recovering physically which is going well though very carefully. Mentally she still struggles and we have been put in touch with a Dr at Cornhill hospital however only I stress because of our private Counseling not because of our own GP or indeed Cornhill itself.

The same doctor treated my daughter throughout with her first call about mental health to her calls about her back. This doctor has now left the practice.

My daughter was 20 at the end of last year and has been through so so much trauma. I have barely touched the surface. My real sadness is she was seriously ill twice and basically got no support. I worry about her, she still needs help support and lives with me as not able in her head to live away. She was such a confident person . She has the live help support of me and finance.

So many people are I am sure going through similar or worse situations with no family network. I feel so let down and my daughter thankful is still with us but by no means mentally stable .

I would like some sort of resolution though I guess this may not be possible .

Dear Chris65,

Thank you for sharing your daughters story. We are grateful for you taking the time to share these experiences as it allows us to improve our services.

I am really sorry to hear of your story and your ongoing concerns and worries. It would be helpful if we could discuss this further and wonder if you could contact me at julia.wells@nhs.scot please and I can arrange a suitable time to speak with you.

However, should you wish not to contact me, I wish to assure you that as a service we will be looking into your story and what we can do to improve our service.

Kind Regards,

Julia

Dear Chris65,

I’m genuinely saddened to read your story, not just because you and your daughter have had such a difficult time over the last few years but because the responses you have received when reaching out for help have left you feeling let down and unsupported. I don't think any parent could read this and not feel the hurt that must have caused.

I see Julia has offered the opportunity to speak with her directly about the Royal Cornhill Hospital aspects of your story however, I know that leaves the GP Practice aspect without a response and I will do what I can to make sure your story is shared with them.

Most of the GP Practices in Grampian are independent contractors, with a separate complaints and feedback system. They are not registered to respond to feedback received through Care Opinion and don’t routinely access the feedback shared. If you would like to receive a response to these aspects the best option would be to share your story with the Practice Manager directly, however I know this means you would have to let them know who you are and not everyone feels comfortable doing this. If you would prefer I can forward your story on your behalf. To do this you would need to forward the name of the practice to me, either by email (kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot) or by telephone/text (07885720267).

Help is also available to share your concerns with the GP Practice from the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). PASS are an independent service offering free and confidential advice and they can be contacted on 0800 917 2127, or for more information please go to www.patientadvicescotland.org.uk

I sincerely hope you are able to find some form of resolution and hope to hear from you soon.

Take care,

Kirsten
