"A&E refused to assess me for infection"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department General and specialist medicine / Ward 24

(as the patient),

I suffer with Rheumatoid Arthritis and currently have a clot in my right knee, due to this I have limited movement and require crutches to walk. In July 2022 I attended Altnagalvin Hospital A&E, as my toes on the right leg were going very dark. The doctor called me and on the way to where they were due to examine me, they said that it would take half the night to get there, and had me stop in a corridor and look at me. My leg and foot were so swollen the doctor couldn’t find a pulse without the help from a machine and they said there was nothing they could do as the foot looked fine. I asked about the darkness on the toes and explained that my toes randomly lose feeling in them. The doctor's response was that the toes didn’t look dark to them and that as I could feel my toes at that moment there was nothing they could do. I asked the doctor about the swelling in the leg, as when I measured the legs there was a 6 cm difference. They measured them and told me that they couldn’t find a difference and discharged me.

The darkness on my toes ended up spreading to the rest of my foot and the majority of my lower right leg. This resulted in me being admitted to Ward 24, which was the only positive part of this experience, as everyone on Ward 24 treated me with respect and kindness. I was kept in for 6 days whilst being diagnosed and treated for a severe case of cellulitis. I feel like if the original doctor had taken the time to properly assess me, this could have been prevented.

To make matters worse, I contacted the complaints department about this and was told they had 28 days to respond to me. It is now 6 months later, and I still haven’t had a proper response regarding this complaint. Every time I ask for an update I am told it is ongoing.

I feel very let down.
