"My maternity and antenatal care was fabulous"

About: Maternity care / Community Midwifery Unit Maternity care / Labour Suite Maternity care / Maternity Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

I had a baby boy in Ninewells hospital  in December 22. My maternity and antenatal care was fabulous.

I was admitted with hyperemesis and covid in June 2022. The GP trainee doctor I saw and the senior nurse who looked after me during the night were so lovely, kind and caring.

The Lochee midwives in Dundee were fantastic. In particular Lorna and Donna who were both kind and caring and helped me deal with my anxieties around pregnancy after a tragic experience a friend had.

I went up to maternity triage a couple of times and on both occasions saw Rachel who was also fabulous and put me at ease.

Lorna explained to me the different birth options which greatly helped me make an informed decision when I was really unsure what to do. We decided on a c section. I couldn’t fault the care. The anaesthetist, Andrew, is the best doctor I have ever seen. He kept us calm and explained everything so well and made the whole experience a positive one. The midwife Logan was superb as were the obstetricians Dr Orr and Dr Suttie.

I went to a couple of antenatal classes in Dundee. The online one felt distant but the face to face one was superb. It was particularly good due to the small numbers and the encouragement by the midwife, Abbie, to make a WhatsApp group. This was life changing for me as to regularly meet these girls for a coffee settled my anxiety no end.

Thank you all for such a positive experience.

Dear Membergh 95

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your baby. I hope you are enjoying making memories together as a family. It is wonderful to hear that the social links you made antenatally with a little nudge from Abbie has led you to form really supportive friendships with other new parents. This is really heartwarming to read particularly as you feel this has helped with your anxieties as a new parent.

I sincerely thank you for the kind words you have shared relating to all of our service areas and appreciate you taking the time out of your no doubt busy schedule to do this. This type of feedback is so valuable to staff and I will take great pride in sharing this with all teams involved in care delivery as I know this is the type of care they all strive to provide every day. Your feedback is so important to us.

We will use your perspective regarding the virtual antenatal education to hopefully improve things and make this feel less distant - thank you for sharing your experience of this. We know that the virtual platform can create barriers to warmth and removes the important non verbal elements of communication that face to face interaction supports more fully however understand this also makes sessions more accessible for women/families.

I am pleased to hear that your experience of the more intimate face to face sessions helped prepare you and am happy to hear that you viewed this as such a positive contributory factor to your journey overall.

It is really nice to hear how your experience through pregnancy, birth and into the postnatal period has been so positive and I hope that you continue to have such positive experiences as a new parent.

Best Wishes,
