"My husbands last week of life !!!"

About: Lurgan / District Nursing

(as a relative),

My husband had been diagnosed with lung cancer for a second time.  The first was 5 years ago. He also had other health issues and was in his eighties. He was in hospital with breathing problems and fluid on lung.

During his time in hospital he ate very little and became weaker.  He also was always wet when I visited and I had to ask if I could shower him ( he needed help).

The doctor released him after 6 days. I brought a very ill man home who never ate anything more until he died 10 days later. He was very weak and tried to get up and go to loo but fell badly and I could not lift him.

I needed help.  I rang the Marie Curie nurse to ask how to get help and she put me in contact with the district nurse., My heroes!  Immediately we received a hospital bed,  incontinence pads, a commode, medication and help and support.  I had not realised my husband was dying but these wonderful people made his last days comfortable, pain free and clean and no more falls.

He died on Christmas Day with his family. I am heartbroken but so grateful to this wonderful team from Lurgan.  From the bottom of my heart I thank you 💔

Dear Charapn53

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are very sorry for the loss of your late Husband and send our sympathies to you and your family at this difficult time.

We are sorry to hear your Husband was not referred to Community Services on his discharge from hospital and you struggled for those last days. If you wish to tell us more on this matter please contact me on 028 3756 6927.

Our District Nursing staff take great pride in supporting and caring for our palliative patients and their family. I will share with the team your very kind feedback and we wish you and your family well.

Kind Regards

Julie
