"long and ultimately unsuccessful wait in the A&E Dept"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I want to share feedback about a very long and ultimately unsuccessful wait in the A&E Dept of Wishaw Hospital on New year’s eve for my partner.

My husband has multiple health conditions and was unwell on new years eve, after an unsuccessful call to the doctors I rang 111 who called paramedics out to us. The Paramedics advised taking him to hospital for assessment and treatment.

On arrival we were informed of it being a 4 hour wait to be seen, we entered the triage system and agreed to wait. This wait was then extended to 5 hrs and then after 9 we were told it would be 12 so we elected to go home.

I feel like the waiting time was ridiculous and wholly unacceptable particularly given that people were being brought in by the police, who were then seen ahead of us. I want to complain because waiting times have become far too long and I think they need urgently addressing. I also witnessed people in the waiting with babies who also left the queue as the wait was so long and I feel very strongly that this wasn’t right!

Dear stonefh66

Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like it was a very worrying time and I am sure the NHS Lanarkshire will be in touch with you shortly.

If you would like to tell us how the Scottish Ambulance Service crew that attended your husband did, may I ask that you contact our Patient Experience Team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your name, Care Opinion username, your husband's name and the address we attended.

I do hope your husband is feeling better.

Kindest regards

David

Dear stonefh66,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience of our Emergency Department at Wishaw. I am sorry to hear of your poor experience and would like to apologise for the lengthy wait your partner had to wait to be seen within our exceptionally busy department. I would like to reassure you that we take all feedback seriously and we will use your feedback to help improve the service we provide to our patients.

If you wish to discuss this further it would be helpful if you could contact our Patient Affairs department so they can understand the issues in more detail and respond to you personally. You can contact them by email: PatientAffairs.Wishaw@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or by phone: 01698 366 558.

I hope your partner has been reviewed by his GP/ other practitioner following his attendance and is recovering well.

Best Wishes,

Julie.
