"Makes young patients reluctant to go to a doctor."

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Endoscopy

(as a service user),

I'm a male aged mid 20s. I've had issues with my stomach area for 2-3 years. I did get an endoscopy done around a year ago. It said I had multiple areas of extrinsic compressions. I still don't know what's causing these, nor do I know why I'm still in pain. I was told that it's IBS.

Other than the endoscopy, I've never had a face to face appointment. I went to my GP a couple of months back as I've lost 3/4 of a stone in weight. My GP requested an urgent colonoscopy but the Doctor who did the phone appointments wrote to the GP saying that it's not required and to see a dietician. I'm a graduate - I had the sense to adjust my diet first before I sought medical advice.

It's this kind of experience that makes young patients reluctant to go to a doctor.

Hi

I am very sorry to read your story and can only apologise to you for you feeling the service has let you down.

As I do not have any details I cannot comment on your individual case but this is not the way we would like our patients to feel.

My only suggestion would be that if your symptoms are not improving then I would suggest you go back and discuss further with your GP who may re-refer you.

Again I am very sorry to hear that you feel very let down and hopefully your GP may re-refer you for further discussion
