"My rehabilitation after RTC"

About: Alton Community Hospital / Inwood Ward

(as the patient),

In the summer I was involved in an RTC between a motorbike and a car. I was on the bike and I came off very much second best. I’d suffered considerable injury and was air ambulanced to Southampton Hospital where I underwent several surgeries to bolt me back together again. I was transferred from Southampton to Basingstoke and then to Alton Community Hospital for rehabilitation.

Alton in their own words were unsure of how to deal with me as my injuries were many. I’d been bed bound for 4 months, I’d lost a lot of weight and my strength and joint flexibility was very poor.

The care I was given from the nursing staff was excellent. Always compassionate.

The physio team were superb. I was not the usual kind of patient so, even though I was pretty broken, they rose to the challenge and got me walking again.

Everyone at Alton conducted themselves with utmost professionalism at all times that was matched by their charm and sense of humour.

Thank you everyone involved, especially those on the Inwood Ward. I am eternally grateful.

I am the consultant for the Mid Hampshire Urgent Community Response service. Looking after individuals at home instead of hospital when it is safe to do so.

Dear Broken Biker

Thank you so much for posting your story and your feedback regarding your care on Inwood Ward at Alton Community Hospital.

I am the Clinical Lead and a nurse by profession. I was aware of your stay and rehab journey on the ward. I think on the day I was working on the ward you were off to have some further surgery? So our paths didn't cross. As I mentioned I'm a nurse but I'm also a mum of two young men. I have experienced traumatic injury in our family too, so we share maybe some common ground, all be it mine was the carers role.

I am so pleased to hear that the team rose to the challenge with your rehabilitation needs and that they did so with professionalism, charm and humour.

I note from your story that the food was perhaps not quite as charming? Please do respond and let us know as much as you can to help us improve as much as we can. Nutrition is so vital in your recovery so its important to us.

I will make sure that all the team get to hear your feedback it's so important to us.

We all wish you the very best as your recovery progresses. My personal thanks to you for your story as a mum of a recovered broken biker and the Clinical Lead.

Thank You
