"The surgery has offered no solution"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I require 1 tablet per day for life. In early 2023 I am going out of UK for an extended period and calculated the number of tablets that I will require. I left my usual voicemail prescription request at surgery explaining the requirement for this number of tablets. When I collected prescription at pharmacy, I found I had been issued far fewer tablets - more than 20 short of what I need. Called and left another voicemail to surgery to explain problem. Was called back by receptionist who advised that doctor had said system only permits a maximum of a 3 month prescription. Essentially I have been left without over three weeks of medication that I will need, and the surgery has offered no solution to that.

In summary, I feel my health is at risk due to 'the system' and it seems that the doctor considers that to be an acceptable situation. Feeling helpless and consider doctor to be irresponsible.

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with us and I'm very sorry that we have not been able to deliver the standard or quality of care we strive for on this occasion.

I understand that communication with your GP about your medication is the main issue. GP practices operate independently and have their own feedback, comments and complaints systems and unfortunately I don’t have any way of forwarding your Care Opinion post directly to them. I would therefore encourage you to get in touch with your GP’s practice manager directly. It is important that they are aware of what has happened in order to feed back to you and consider how this issue could be resolved.

If that is something you might find difficult to do there is an independent service called PASS (Patient Advice and Support Service) who can help you to give feedback, raise concerns or make a complaint about any health service, including GP practices. It is free and entirely confidential. You can contact PASS on 0800 917 2127 or visit their website at Patient Advice & Support Service | Citizens Advice Scotland (cas.org.uk).

If you feel your health is at risk in any way whilst your GP practice is closed for the Christmas break please call 111 for advice.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Kind regards,

Lisa Martin, Patient Experience Public Involvement Manager.

Hi KT Mearns,

I'm sorry to hear you have already raised this with the Practice Manager and not had a successful outcome.

Could I ask you to please get in touch with us at the Patient Experience Public Involvement Team at:

PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

providing the name and address of your GP Practice, and we will also forward your Care Opinion story to them to try and get a response for you.

Kind regards.

Lisa Martin, Patient Experience Public Involvement Manager.

Excellent. Thank you very much.

Having returned home, I opened a letter from surgery advising me they have now removed me from practice list since out of the country for 3 months! I now have no GP. Where is the patient care in all of this?
