I have been suffering pain due to sciatica for approx 8 months. I have been receiving physio for the past few months which unfortunately hasn't been successful in helping. In this time I have developed numbness below the knee and severe back spasms in the night.
I was sent for an urgent x-ray of my whole back, however radiology decided only the bottom needed doing despite the referral requesting both. I've since had to wait for a further x-ray of the top of my back. I've been awaiting 2 weeks for results now. I'm on the urgent referral list for an MRI. I've been told its a 3 month waiting list for this. Kindly my Dr has pushed for a scan as he's aware of how quickly my condition is progressing.I received a call from NHS borders last Thursday stating I would have a scan within 3 weeks but would need to travel to Glasgow. This isn't an issue so I accepted. Still awaiting an appointment a week later, going into the Christmas weekend.
I had a Dr appointment this evening at my Drs request, to keep an eye on my condition. He noticed a marked deterioration in my numbness and his concerns were growing. As at this point I had also been incontinent of urine twice which was a first. I was referred to the hospital after my Dr called ahead and I was accepted to be seen. I had some examinations including a bladder scan and reflex examination. My Dr had hoped I'd be scanned due to the marked deterioration however again this didn't take place. I was sent on my way as I didn't appear to be in pain and I could walk fine.
I fully appreciate that the NHS is currently under strain but I'm also very aware that I could end up with life long damage if this isn't caught quickly. I don't feel this is being taken as seriously by some professionals as it should be. I have a suspected prolapsed disk which is pressing on my sciatic nerve. I've lost feeling in my lower leg, top of my foot and up the side of my thigh. I'm on every medication possible and still the discomfort is coming through. I'm losing money through being unable to work. It's impacting my life. I'm now on an increased dose for depression due to how this is making me feel. Yet tonight after being in hospital I was sent on my way and told all they could do was put in another urgent referral for an MRI but that unfortunately they don't have control of when people are scanned.
I'm hoping the care improves as at present I don't have much faith. I cant fault the care of my physio and Dr.
