"Outstanding Care under the Neurosurgeons"

Four weeks ago I attended the A&E department at the QEUH. Following a thorough and comprehensive Consultation I was admitted to hospital. My journey of investigations and tests commenced, I had a short stay in ARU5  followed by a few nights in B5. Despite both departments being extremely busy I was treated with kindness and compassion. The medical staff investigating my symptoms were excellent. Multiple tests and an urgent MRI scan identified the problem, I needed specialist surgery and was transferred to Ward 65 under the care of the Neurosurgeon Mr St George and his team. 

The results of the scan and the date and time of my surgery were given to me at the same time. Things moved very quickly and there was a clear plan in place.  I underwent major surgery and spent 3 weeks in Ward 65.

The care I received was second to none and for that I am extremely grateful. 

The staff on the ward were caring and friendly and certainly knew their job for which they did very well, (actually very very well). 

The first week post surgery were difficult, pain, loss of function and mobility I required help with the very basic needs. I can not thank the staff enough for the support, encouragement and reassurance that they gave to me. 

A special thanks to Nick who demonstrated absolute professionalism.  His kind and caring words with his dry humour thrown in,  made a difference during a very difficult and challenging time. 

The staff in Ward 65 were amazing, kind, caring and compassionate.  

There is also a lot to be said for the open ward.

I found that patients supported each other and were inspirational to their fellow patients. Sharing a room certainly makes a positive difference to your recovery despite that occasional lack of privacy, I thought I would struggle with that but far from it! 

I also witnessed care being delivered by other teams of Neurosurgeons and can only describe them as outstanding. 

I absolute applaud each and every one of them, what an amazing job they do! 

My recovery is far from complete and at this stage we don't know if I will be fully mobile again. What I do know however, is that I am under the care of amazing surgeons who have instilled confidence and trust in their capabilities and approach in my care and management. 

I want to take this opportunity to thank them and highlight the excellent job they do.  Especially at a time when there is so much negativity directed towards our NHS.
