"How the Dr's no longer has any Dr's (that will see you)"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as a parent/guardian),

There have so many small incidents that we have overlooked in the past few years, but eventually we can no longer turn a blind eye. It is all but impossible to see an Doctor at our GP surgery. My wife has been experiencing these problems for a while but when it affected my son we made a complaint. This has yet to be responded to.

Then the Dr when attempting to finally see my son tried to force him to attend the appointment alone without his mother. A second complaint has been raised and still no response from either yet.

Then two weeks ago I took my son to A&E on a Sunday. I did make mention of the difficulties we are experiencing at the GP. Two days ago I receive a letter from a Dr at the GP surgery (that I have never met) who is discussing to receive a letter from A&E criticising the GP surgery. I have not seen this letter, but I find it astonishing that they can respond to this in a letter after a week, but cannot respond to complaints after 6 months.

I would like to to move my family to a GP that will not behave the way our current one does.

Hi Tim20,

I’m so sorry to hear that there have been many things you and your wife have felt unable to seek help for over the past few years. This doesn’t make for easy reading especially that this is now affecting your son.

Although the GP Practices are independent contractors with separate complaints and feedback system to NHS Grampian they should still be responding to complaints within the allocated timeframe - according the NHS Scotland Public Facing Model Complaints Handling Procedure (which should be available on the Practice website). 6 months. is a very long time to be left without a response.

It’s maybe something you’ve done already but if not, it would be worth contacting the practice directly to find out why there has been a delay. The Practice Manager would be the best person to ask. As General Practices aren’t registered to respond to feedback received via Care Opinion and don’t routinely access the feedback shared the practice won’t see this post without you forwarding it to them.

Help is also available to share your concerns with the GP Practice from the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). PASS are an independent service offering free and confidential advice and they can be contacted on 0800 917 2127, or for more information please go to www.patientadvicescotland.org.uk

If after speaking with the practice, you decide you’d still like to move, this website has some more information, but with many Practices at maximum capacity it’s worth having a conversation with the practice before making a decision. https://www.mygov.scot/register-with-doctor/changing-gp.

Hopefully this is helpful – but if you ‘d like to talk through anything, I’d be happy to chat and will do my best to help. I can be contacted by email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot or by telephone text: 07885720267

Take care,

Kirsten
