"No patient dignity"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Xrays and Scans

My mother attended the QEUH last week for a bone density scan. She was not offered a gown but instead was asked to push her trousers below her knees and push her bra/top above her breasts. She was offered a small sheet to attempt to cover her up but she found this difficult to use when having to move for the scan. I do not understand why the service does not offer gowns for patient dignity. Surely it would also be quicker as patients could mobilise easier too? Really disappointed by this lack of oversight.

Dear AJEM, thank you for taking the time to tell us about your mother's experience of radiotherapy and I am sorry that she had an upsetting experience of the bone density scan.

My diagnostics colleagues have asked if I can post the following response.

As metal can affect the scan, the information leaflet which the patient receives in advance advises patients not to wear underwired bras or jeans. If there are any small metal items such as zips they are temporarily moved to the side of the scan area, rather than the patient fully undressing and putting on a gown. Gowns are available but generally tend to be used only when there is a significant amount of very heavy clothing items or metal.

We recognise that we need to give patients clearer information therefore we have a new information leaflet in in progress and we have aimed to improve the information on what to wear. We will listen to the points made and please pass on our sincerest apologies to your mother for any distress caused during her scan.
