I was admitted to ward 21 at RAH following a trimalleolar fracture and dislocation. I was admitted to the ward for 7 days and during my time there the care provided to myself and others was not appropriate. I was left for hours in pain crying my eyes out with nothing being done to help. This happened day after day despite rising it to the consultant doctor, ward doctor and any other nurse that would listen to me.
My family were so distressed by how distressed I was when I was supposed to be in a place of care. Also observed on the ward was poor moving and handling of elderly patients but agency staff. This resulted in a patient being injured causing harm.
I have pressed my buzzer for an hour before anyone would come to give me a bed pan meaning I had almost wet the bed. This happened a few times. They then moved my bed space to a space which didn’t have a buzzer so I was unable to call for help.
Don’t get me wrong there are some good staff on this ward however, due to the lack of care and compassion this over rides any good efforts by the other staff. The ward has a staff member left in charge on their own, short staffed when they shouldn’t be having that stress. The ward is not fit for purpose.
