"Myosure/Womb Polyps"

I attended the Rapid Access Unit Gynae clinic at Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride recently to have womb polyps removed and a womb lining biopsy taken.

The method of polyp removal was via the Myosure procedure. 

Having researched the Myosure process beforehand, and read some feedback on online forums, I went into this feeling pretty apprehensive and a little nervous about the potential for pain occurring.

I learned a lot from these online support forums and I am grateful for the knowledgeable and valuable information that is shared within these patient’s peer groups. 

In the interests of balance though, and without invalidating anyone else’s personal experiences, I’d like to share my own story here incase it might help inform someone else who is undergoing the same treatment.

Going through those clinic doors, I was mentally prepared for the worst case scenario but I can honestly say that all of my fears proved to be unfounded. 

The Doctor who treated me was incredibly patient and very informative. Every step of the process was explained to me during the consultation. The risks and benefits were set out in very clear, easy to understand terms which ensured that I could make a fully informed choice and give proper consent. I never felt rushed or pressured in any way and I felt absolutely reassured that the treatment would be halted if I was finding it too painful at any point.

I’m very relieved, and grateful, that the professionalism and skill of the doctor ensured that the Myosure procedure itself was quick and painless for me - I could only feel vibrations and hear the noise of the instruments and I blethered away comfortably with the nursing staff and the doctor throughout the entire process. 

For balance, there were a couple of brief moments of minor discomfort as the instruments were being inserted but the numbing gel definitely helped reduce any unpleasant sensations. Also, there was just a little cramping at times but nothing I could describe as pain.

I actually never even felt the womb lining biopsy being taken and was genuinely surprised when the doctor said the procedure was finished. 

The option of additional treatment - a coil to help manage any ongoing post menopausal bleeding - was also explained in full to me during the initial consultation. I felt comfortable enough after the Myosure procedure was finished to have it done at this same appointment rather than potentially having to come back in a few weeks. 

I really am very, very grateful to the doctor for her compassionate approach and for ensuring that this entire process was the opposite of what I had feared - sincere apologies if I’m wrong but I think it was Dr Tani? 

The nurses and support staff were also first class, from start to finish I was treated with kindness and received excellent care. I came away with an even greater sense of appreciation for our precious NHS.
