I have written here about my sister previously, and I received positive responses. Last spring (2021) she had a psychotic episode and was subsequently thought to be possibly suffering from early onset dementia. We eventually were assigned a social worker and some mental health support was put in place for 2 x45 minute sessions a week. Meanwhile we waited for follow up on what was the likely cause of her decline in memory and ability to function with everyday activities. In the meantime, myself and other family members are working hard to keep her living safely at home. We had a follow up session online in February, and further neuropsychological assessment in October. This was followed by an appointment with a consultant in early November where we were told she had early onset dementia and would be referred to the appropriate service. I was happy that we would finally be involved with professionals who would understand the difficulties we were all having. It is now over 5 weeks since the meeting with the consultant and I have made enquiries into the status of the referral, and have been told that the letter of referral has not yet been sent, and that the consultant is very busy with full clinics every day.
I'm sure this is true but it does leave me frustrated and exhausted, and wonder if the service is not being given the resources it needs to work efficiently.
My sister lives alone and so is very vulnerable. As a family we are doing our best to anticipate and meet her needs, but we know there are professionals who could help us with this and we need to be put in contact with them.
I am tired and frustrated that we have to wait for admin to be completed, and I expect that there are probably more people experiencing the same delays that we are.
