"This nurse really upset me"

About: Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust / End of Life - Palliative Care Weldmar Hospicecare Trust

(as a relative),

I cannot praise the staff at Weldmar enough, they are caring, kind, considerate and made me feel important too as well as my partner, this was nice.

District nurses, about 5 or 6 different ones, came to the house. Only one of them I felt didn’t do the job. My partner was laid in bed, dying of cancer, and this nurse just looked at me and asked so what can I do? The nurse said hello to her and then basically left – they didn’t do anything. My partner died a couple of days later.

When I called the doctor to verify death, they said they didn’t know it had become this bad, they had been on holiday but was surprised no one had informed them on their return.

I would have thought the district nurses had a duty to inform the patient’s doctor.

This nurse really upset me, and I felt they gave no care to my partner or myself during this traumatic time. I had been caring for my partner for 2 and half years while she battled cancer.

As I said, the other nurses were brilliant, and I couldn’t fault them, and Weldmar were brilliant can’t praise them enough.

Firstly, my sincere condolences on the loss of your partner.

On behalf of Weldmar Hospicecare, thank you for the feedback about our part in the care provided to your partner and yourself, and I shall ensure this is mentioned to our nursing team.

My very best,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write and share your story with us. I am sorry to hear about your partner's death. I am sorry also for some of the experiences you describe and the impact it has had.

Thank you for also sharing the kind words about the other community staff, I am glad to hear that overall the support and care was good.

We can’t change what happened, but are keen to ensure that we learn from your experiences. I am keen to improve services and ensure where there maybe additional learning and support required by our teams we are able to support this.

If you would like to share any further information or have an opportunity to discuss your concerns further please let me know and I would be happy to arrange to make contact with you.

Thanks again for writing. It is much appreciated, especially at such a difficult time

with best wishes

Jane

Dear Whiskeynd88

I just wanted to come back to update you following the previous feedback from your story.

We have shared your story with our staff working within our community teams and identified areas where some staff feel they would like more support to improve their confidence around the softer skills when communicating with patients and their loved ones.

We have used this information to improve our current education programme for staff giving them enhanced skills and confidence to provide excellent care and support.
