"I had an abortion"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I was so scared when I realised I needed an abortion. I found the number to phone online and when I rang the staff were so kind and told me I’d get a phone call two days later to talk to the nurse about it. When the call came I was so nervous but the nurse was just lovely and talked me through everything. I needed a scan because I’d taken plan B and I just burst into tears at that point at the thought of it.

The nurse kept me calm and told me what to expect when I came in so I felt better prepared to handle it. When I came for my scan the next week it was actually the same nurse that spoke to me afterwards and she was even nicer in person! She said she knew she’d spoken to me before asked how I was and made me feel totally at ease. I chose to have my abortion in hospital and she talked me through absolutely everything and answered my millions of questions. When I came back a few days later for my procedure I couldn’t believe it when this same nurse knocked on my room door and came in to say that I was going to be in her care. Even though we’d gone through it all a few days before I think she could tell I was terrified again so she broke it all down into steps what was going to happen and made sure I was okay.

The abortion itself was unpleasant but this nurse and the student she had with her made it so much easier. Nothing was too much trouble she made me feel like she had all the time in the world for me and I felt so well looked after. When I was ready to go home she made sure I was comfortable and gave me a leaflet with information in case I needed it. I work in social care and if I can treat my clients with half of the care respect skill and good humour that she can then I’m happy. From introducing herself fully every time we met to checking my understanding after everything she gave textbook high standard treatment. I hope she gets the recognition she deserves as an angel on earth. I don’t know if I’m allowed to name her but she was called Morven and I’m so genuinely grateful to her. In a world where women's health care is being eroded we should protect and celebrate the woman who give choices and respect to those having abortions.

Dear earthgt35

Thank you so much for your very positive feedback. We do appreciate how difficult this is for our patients and it is lovely to hear when the care we deliver, whilst not making the process easier, does make the experience more palpable.

I will have great pleasure in sharing your feedback with Morven and with the rest of the team..

I hope you are recovering.

Thank you

Denise Marshall
