"Small actions go a long way"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as a service user),

After a traumatic chest injury resulting in broken ribs and a pneumothorax, I was admitted initially to Ward 4A. The ward was extremely busy, but every member of staff was welcoming and ensured I was comfortable. Staff nurse Alanna was  was so attentive and kind, which was much appreciated as I was in a lot of pain.

The following evening I was transferred to 4B, and again the staff were very welcoming. The lovely SCN, Nicola, introduced herself, and it was very evident that she heads a well-run ward. There was a definite display of team spirit in a busy environment and everyone pitched in and helped each other.

All the staff were keen, knowledgeable and extremely busy, but the most important thing to me as a patient was that they went out of their way to stop, chat and show interest. The overall atmosphere was busy but informal - the HCSWs and domestics all went out of  their way to ask how I was feeling. These are the actions that are often forgotten working in a stressful environment when staff numbers are depleted.

In a current difficult working environment, these small actions go a long way. Thank you to all for your kindness and fabulous care. It was very much appreciated!
