"I had a stroke"

About: Barnet Hospital / Accident and emergency Barnet Hospital / Neurology Edgware Community Hospital / Neurological Rehabilitation Centre

(as a relative),

It all happened in Nigeria in November. I was on a visit. My wife and children were here in the UK. I felt unwell suddenly and was taken to a nearby local hospital by my brothers. My blood pressure was checked and found to be high. I was given anti hypertensive medication.

According to my brothers,  my right hand and my left leg became weak and my speech started disappearing gradually.

My wife was not aware of my illness until a few days later.  She instructed my brothers to take me to a well established hospital for further investigations and treatment. I was admitted at this hospital and had some blood tests and CT Scans done. They showed some infarction on the left side of my brain and that was the cause of the stroke. Treatment was commenced swiftly.

My wife and my daughter arrived Nigeria soon afterwards and came to the hospital.  My wife had a meeting with the consultant and enquired if I was medically fit to travel.  The consultant prepared a medical report and  a confirmation letter to the airline.

We left Nigeria soon afterwards and I was taken straight to accident and emergency at Barnet Hospital.  I was seen immediately on arrival my blood pressure was very high and I was weak and very tired.

I had CT Scan done twice in A&E.

The CT scan results and all the medication including the report was handed to the doctors in A&E. The commented on the late presentation.

I was later admitted at Spruce ward for three weeks and subsequently transferred to the NRC at the start of December

My wife wrote this story on my behalf as I currently suffer from global aphasia.
