"Recovery from an operation"

About: Enhanced Care / Intermediate Care Services (ICS)

(as a relative),

In September my mum who is in her seventies had a bad fall and broke her left femur and her left wrist. She was operated on and was allowed home 14 days later to recuperate.  Two days later the rehabilitation nurse arrived and was fantastic, Susan was her name.  She called every week day and put mum through her physio and each week adding new exercises.

Without this help and care mum would never have been able to achieve what she has in such a short time. Susan showed so much patience’s and understanding of the severe pain mum was in. So showed great compassion and care towards mum and took every thing at mum's pace. She knew when to and when not to push her exercises. She showed her all the different things she could be doing while sitting to strengthen her leg and wrist. Mum progressed from an adapted walking aid to a stick in a short time.

She was able to get in and out of bed but with the props (e.g. a bed rail to allow her to use her strength to help her up while in bed also a leg raiser (like a wee strap) which helped her lift her leg in and out of bed.
When her cast was removed from her wrist she began exercises to help move the wrist. However due to severe nerve pain this proved very challenging and is still ongoing.
All I can say is with out this help she would not be at the stage she is, She can now use a stick to walk. I know she has a long road ahead and many more months of recovery to come, but without this specialised help she would never have had the start she has had, all thanks to Susan who was amazing, kind and so understanding.
