I was recently admitted to the QEUH with severe pelvic pain. Despite it being the weekend and probably busy, the nurses and doctors looking after me took their time to make me as comfortable and reassured as possible so I wanted to write on here to thank them and let them know how much they helped turn a scary experience into a positive one.
I was very distressed when I arrived at the surgical IAU, having already been there earlier that day. I was quickly given pain relief and comforted by a very kind woman whose name I unfortunately can't remember. She talked to me about my son who I said I was missing and made me feel listened to which did wonders for my anxiety. Colette was also very helpful and attentive and clearly very good at her job.
Neil, the porter who transported me from the SIAU, really cheered me up despite the situation. I enjoyed talking to him and he seemed genuinely caring. He was professional but also very personable which is exactly what I needed.
Once admitted to a ward, I requested a breast pump to prevent engorgement as I am currently breastfeeding. The woman from the post-natal ward who showed me how to use it, who I think was called Lynn, talked to me about my son and made me feel listened to. Her kindness and empathy were appreciated, and she really helped me feel at ease.
Alix, a student who assisted in my vaginal ultrasound, was another reassuring presence. She seemed very knowledgeable and on the ball while helping the doctor who was tired from being in theatre. She held my hand throughout too and talked to me to keep my mind off the examination. The doctor, whose name I sadly don't remember, was very thorough and calm. Usually I find internal examinations very uncomfortable but this was practically painless.
Dr. Powell, the consultant who discussed my upcoming surgery, was very approachable and informative. She seemed sincerely apologetic for the fact that I have been left with this cyst for so long, which I appreciated so much after not feeling listened to by my GP or NHS24. She made me feel like I was in good hands.
Special thanks also to Gillian for being so caring and attentive to my needs. She took her time talking to me and made me feel more at home, and was informative and positive while discharging me.There was another nurse who helped look after me at the latter end of my stay and I unfortunately can't remember her name but she gave me a hug when I woke up and said I missed my son. Hopefully she reads this and knows how much that meant to me.
