"SPA mistreatment"

About: Crisis Mental Health / Single point of access team (SPA) & Emotional Wellbeing Service (EWS)

(as a service user),

Terrible. Been fighting for access to the right mental health support, and denied at every stages, long wait lists of months/years, sometimes get paired with a therapist not matched to you so therapy breaks down quickly and you have to go back on waiting lists. Even when in crisis unless you are going to actually do something to yourself, feels like they don’t care.

On behalf of our service I would like to say I am really sorry that you have had such a negative experience with our team. We have battled with waiting list for some time now, and would like to assure you that we wholeheartedly agree that it is not acceptable for people to have to wait for prolonged periods of time to access interventions.

Over the past few years we have had a number of regular members of staff who have left our service, we have struggled to recruit replacements which I know is a national issue.

At times we have used temporary agency workers in an attempt to reduce the times people are waiting. We have had varying degrees of success with this as it is difficult to recruit staff with the experience needed for our particular service.

We have had a rolling programme of advertising since earlier this year. this has resulted in the recruitment of 5 new clinicians so far ( some of whom have started with us and some will start in the new year). We are hoping that this continued effort is successful in plugging some of the gaps we have in staffing.

Finally I would like to reassure you that we do care and have felt the pressure of being unable to respond as quickly as we would like to people who reach out to us.

I would be more than happy to talk to you further about your experiences to see if there is something we can do to remedy what has happened.

Please do contact myself or any of the Senior Practitioners if you feel you want to talk further about the issues you have raised. You can contact me by ringing ring 0114 226 3636 and ask for Lisa Ryles, or email: lisa.ryles@shsc.nhs.uk
