Following my recent road accident in Ayr, I was taking to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, and I’m glad they took me there.
I can remember being taken in and loads of doctors and other health care professionals were in the room. I was so worried and my anxiety was in overdrive, despite being on strong pain relief I remember them being so comforting and empathetic and talking me through everything and calming me.
The next thing I remember I was taken to Major Trauma Ward 1C. It’s kind of a blur, but I do remember being in the worst pain of my life, and they got the Drs round, who decided I needed surgery that night. Woke up in ICU and the staff were lovely.
Anyway, got sent back to Trauma Ward in 1C, where I came across the most caring and compassionate team of nurses and healthcare support workers. I couldn’t have been the easiest patient with my anxiety and needing constant reassurance along with the amount of pain I was in. They truly did go above and beyond, just supporting me and making such a difficult time of my life easier and bearable.
Nothing was a hassle at all, no matter time of day or night and no matter how busy they were, Even as time went on and I became independent with mobility, still nothing was too much for them. When I was scared to go in the shower on my own at first, they would still stay in the room with me just to put my mind at ease, I can’t even name any certain individual because it was the full team and I would be here all day naming them.
I’d also like to say having pyshio and orthopaedic team on the ward is such a fantastic opportunity for people to get better a lot sooner, and what a fantastic bunch they are too! Just the way they connect with people is amazing, they make your progress so much easier and faster and they are so encouraging and I know I wouldn’t be on my feet again if it wasn’t for their understanding and trickery to push you even when you feel like giving up. Definitely have the best team!
The ANP team too, wow. Also a great thing to have on the ward. And the fact you guys have a support team come around offering and seeing if I need any support I didn’t even know was there. I had worries about my seasonal job ending and me losing my housing tenancy, and what do you know, these guys are helping me with that! I didn’t even know this was a thing!
To say NHS Glasgow goes above and beyond doesn’t cut it, they go even further, and the fact they got me talking to a psychologist without even asking is amazing. You guys have got this right. Along with the right team! Every individual I came across from cleaning, catering, nurses, hcsw, pyshio, anp team, just every one of them were amazing.
I am so so thankful I got taken here. Best team, that’s all I can say. So I’d like to say a massive thank you to every one of them and keep doing what you do!
"Most caring and compassionate bunch of people"
