Trying to contact this hospital by phone is almost impossible. Ask for a unit, spend endless time waiting for the phone to be answered and then they just put it down on you. Most of the doctors don't have English as thier mothers tongue, so communicating is a big problem. My 75 year old mother would have dehydrated had I not been in attendance. Don't let your relations enter this hospital alone.

I’m very concerned that you were worried your mother might have been dehydrated without your help. We take this extremely seriously and have a system of regular checks to make sure every patient is getting enough to drink, and help with this where needed. Please could you contact us through the PALS team on 01708 435454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk to tell us more about your concerns? I’m sorry to hear about problems contacting the hospital by phone. We encourage people to phone wards and departments direct to reduce delays when calling through the switchboard, and contact details are on our website and on appointment letters. I am aware there are some areas where we need to be better at supplying direct line numbers, and please let us know where we can make improvements. We do employ staff who don’t have English as a first language, but it’s a requirement on all staff that they should be able to communicate effectively in English. Please do let us know if you have concerns about the communication skills of a particular member of staff, and we will offer them support to improve this.
