"Fast diagnosis of rare condition and exemplary..."

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

Anything else?

I came in to A & E at 1.30am with acute abdominal pain, and within minutes, had had a blood test, an ECG, pain relief, a urine test, and a subsequent X-ray. My X-ray revealed a dilated bowel, and I was immediately moved to a private room, where my obs were taken roughly every 2 hours, and kept there until I was able to have a CT scan. The CT scan revealed an unusual bowel obstruction, which was subsequently diagnosed as a possible Caecal Volvulus; a twist of the bowel on its own axis. The surgical team appeared, and wanted to operate immediately in order to avoid bowel perforation. The surgeon assured my partner that he would personally call immediately after the operation, to report progress, which he did. The op went successfully, and I woke up, without pain (the best bit), in the very attentive recovery room. I was kept in for 2 weeks, on the digestive diseases ward, as there were a few complications in recovery, and I have nothing but praise for the extraordinary nursing care. I think the nurses are stretched, but they work incredibly hard, and nothing was too much trouble. I would particularly like to mention the nurses and healthcare assistants who work nights. They can be very busy, and are often working with less support. Thank you to you all. Thank you for possibly saving my life. Thank you for sorting out my pain. Thank you for the peppermint tea at 3am. Thank you for listening to me missing my mum. Thank you.

Thank you, so very much, for your very kind words regarding your treatment and care in the Emergency Department and Digestive Diseases Unit. Such feedback is greatly appreciated by our staff. Whilst we aim to provide all of our patients with the highest standards of care it is always such a pleasure to to read of the difference that kindness and compassion can also make at such worrying times. We will, of course, share your thanks with the clinicians, nurses and support teams involved and I know that your kind words will mean a great deal to them.
