I had my first baby at Wigan RAEI on the Maternity Ward. I had a long tough labour and a complicated birth and suffered severe blood loss. I had a total of 3 midwives due to the length of my labour and couldn't fault any of them. I would particularly like to thank the two midwives who helped to deliver my baby (eventually.) They were so supportive and compassionate not just to me but to my husband and Mum too. Also big thanks to the doctor who not only delivered the baby and stitched me up but who cared enough to come onto the ward (after her shift) the following day to check that both me and my baby were OK after the traumatic birth. That really meant a lot. Also the Midwife on the ward. Nothing was too much trouble for her. She never tired of my questions and made me feel at ease when I was worried about things. Whenever I pressed the buzzer she was there and never made me feel like I was wasting her time even though she was always busy. She kept an eye on my medication, assisted me in caring for my baby and caring for myself (washing, eating, cleaning my wounds etc) and taught me about general day to day care of my new baby. She offered advice based on her own personal experiences not only as a midwife but also as a mum. My only criticism would be that in hindsight I think that I perhaps would have benefited from another day in hospital as My husband I ended up bringing our newborn baby back to A&E a few hours after I was discharged as he went into shock. He was admitted onto the Rainbow Ward for tests but discharged later that day. Again couldn't fault the treatment we received from the staff their but feel that I was too exhausted from physical pain, blood loss but also emotionally to really deal with a poorly baby. I know that if it had been suggested to me that I should stay in hospital for an extra night, I would have followed the advice. This is not a criticism of this hospital particularly, it is a criticism of the NHS as a whole as I believe that new Mums are generally discharged too early from the Maternity Ward. All in all throughout the labour, birth and my recovery on the ward, I felt very cared for and for this I thank you.
