"The hospital saved my life as ..."

About: West Middlesex University Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The hospital saved my life as my appendix burst so I am extremely grateful to them.

They were trying hard to keep infection at bay and were putting into practice hygiene procedures.

Some of the staff were friendly and helpful at what was a really scarey time for me.

What could be improved

The worst thing was the noise on the wards. I came up from my operation at midnight and had no sleep all night due to being placed next to a patient with dementia (who shouted all night) and opposite an obese lady who snored like I have never heard before! No single rooms were available, I was told, even if I wanted to pay for one.

After six days and nights next to the lady with dimentia I felt I was going mad, as she kept repeating the same phrases all the time. Even the nurses went home for a break! I think patients with dementia should be kept on a separate specialist ward, for their own good and so other patients can rest and sleep.

Some of the staff were harsh and uncaring - perhaps years in the job make them that way. They also prescribed me drugs that I am allergic to, (to take home), but fortunately rectified the mistake in time before I took them.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. For the past few years the Trust has been working to address noise at night issues and we have seen a significant reduction in the number of complaints about noise from staff at night. We will continue to look for ways of making all patients' stay in hospital as comfortable as possible.

You have raised some specific issues, which we would be pleased to investigate in more detail. We have an excellent PALS (patient advice and liaison service) who would be happy to hear from you. Email pals.service@wmuh.nhs.uk or call 020 8321 6261.
