"Sons admittance to children's ward"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

On the whole the experience would be one I would never want to repeat. I felt I was kept in the dark about the treatment that was given to my son (apparently it was query meningitis), the junior Dr (I presume) that kept trying and failing to cannulate my son successfully.

The horror he endured that night will scar me mentally for years. And not forgetting the absolutely awful play specialist who on being asked to assist with distracting my 3yr old so he would take his medications (orally), told my son she would "make Mummy go home and leave him there" if he didn't take them.

Still makes me shiver knowing what he was put through at an already distressing time!

I should have realised what we were in for, after telling the Nurse who came over to give my son Calpol to reduce his temperature that Calpol will make him vomit, she literally forced it down him, sat him up with a smug look and said "that was easy, all done" at which he promptly vomited all over her, the bed, the floor and himself.

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback about your son’s care at our hospital. We welcome all feedback and would like to assure you that all comments are taken seriously and acted upon as part of our ongoing commitment to improving patient experience.

We are concerned, however, by your comments about our Children’s Ward. This is not the kind of experience we would want anyone to have as a patient in our care. We always strive to provide the highest standard of care and we are very sorry if, on this occasion, our standards fell short of those we aim to provide.

The matron and lead nurse on our Children’s Ward carry out a ward round in the morning and afternoon specifically to speak to patients and parents. We encourage parents to use this opportunity to raise any concerns or issues they may have so they can be addressed promptly.

The behaviour you have described is not acceptable and we would appreciate an opportunity to investigate this. Please telephone matron on (01384) 456 111 extension 4661 if you would like us to arrange a meeting to discuss these incidents further. Or, if you prefer, contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on free phone 0800 073 0510 who can arrange a meeting for you.
