"good health care"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Urology NHS Medway CCG

(as the patient),

I visited my doctor after a bad fall at the beginning of January. It was found I had a prolapse and needed to see a specialist.

This specialist appointment was at the end of January and I had the operation needed in April. Whilst repairing the prolapse a polyp was removed from my bladder which was sent away to be checked. Two weeks later I was called in to see the specialist who said the removed polyp was pre-cancerous. Because it was found so early (I had no symptoms whatsoever of this) I am now booked in for an operation to have the cells removed from around the polyp and a chemowash inserted next week.

I cannot fault any service I received from my doctors and the treatment at the hospital has been excellent.

It has just been discovered that I now have diabetes and once again the treatment I am receiving is very good. My only complaint here is that I have been borderline diabetic for a couple of years and I did ask the diabetic nurse if I could go to the classes that are given for diabetics and I was not allowed to because of the large number of people requiring this.

I honestly feel that if the health service would permit borderline diabetics to attend these meetings then I could have got help which might have actually prevented me from developing diabetes.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent experience at the hospitals urology department.

I was pleased to read that the care and treatment you received was excellent.

I understand that you now have been diagnosed with diabetes which you are being been well treated for. The issue you highlight about concerns around classes for borderline diabetics has been shared with our commissioners so that they can review the demand for such a service as you feel that perhaps if you had been able to attend such a class then it may have helped prevent you from developing diabetes.

I understand this is an issue our diabetic service is aware of and have raised on behalf of patients.

Thank you once again for your feedback

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you feel you did not have enough support before you were diagnosed with diabetes.

NHS Medway Clinical Commissioning Group is aware there is a high demand for diabetes education and is investing in more staff to run education classes for people with diabetes. We are also looking at how we can improve information given to people at high risk of developing diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the greatest health threats of the 21st century and is on the increase. There are already more than 14,000 people diagnosed with the condition in the Medway Towns and doctors believe there could be many more unaware they have it.

Supporting people with long-term conditions is one of our priorities. This month we held two public events in association with Diabetes UK at the King Charles Hotel, Gillingham on 4 June and at our headquarters at Fifty Pembroke Court, Chatham Maritime, on 11 June to talk about which services are a priority for them. Both groups highlighted the importance of education programmes.

Along with the public health department of Medway Council we are advising those most at risk to learn how to manage their lifestyle by changing diets and taking more exercise to maintain a healthy weight.

Thank you again for highlighting and sharing your experience.
