"Wait for replacement contraceptive implant"

About: Lerwick Health Centre

(as the patient),

I phoned the doctors at Lerwick Health Centre in early March regarding my implant expiring. I was put on a waiting list and finally received a letter to say my appointment would be two months later in May. I thought this was a ridiculous length of time to wait but did, then on the day I was phoned to say that the person doing it had phoned in sick and I would now have to wait until the 19th of June.

I understand that this is not an emergency procedure but considering when I originally had the implant put in I was registered at a health centre in Greenock and it took around three days from phoning to receiving the implant, I am baffled by the amount of time you have to wait!

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry you experienced a delay. Contraceptive implants are done in one of two ways – either a patient is referred to a Gynaecology service, or a Health Centre can offer the service if they have a GP who has done additional training. Lerwick Health Centre does have two GPs who have the necessary training to carry out this procedure, but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances neither of the GPs were available on the day of your appointment and the clinic had to be rescheduled.
