"Agonising Toothache"

About: The Princess Royal Hospital / Oral surgery

(as the patient),

I am GAD sufferer, and have been so for years....The fear of the dentist, has kept me away for years, and therefore my mouth resembles boot hill cemetery.

Ive constantly had gum infections, and managed by hook or by crook, managed to get antibiotics to treat it...

This time however the pain was so bad I sought assistance...

So I called the number I found, and was put through to a helper (after a long wait)

After finding out I had taken more than the prescribed dose of painkillers, I was then handed over to a nurse who completely forgot about the agony I was in, and instead concentrated on the amount of pain meds I had taken...

I did ask if I reported to hospital, as they asked, would my teeth be attended to?

The answer was a flat no...All they cared about was the symptom, and not the cause. I didn't take the meds because I like them. Pills make me gag, but its preferable to constant pain.

My one thank you goes out to the makers of Orajel, the best (over the counter) local anaesthetic yet.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Now, from the information you have provided I am not sure whether you have been in touch with our hospital services or instead with the local emergency dental service (http://www.shropscommunityhealth.nhs.uk/rte.asp?id=10148) which is run by the local community trust and not by our organisation I'm afraid. If you would like to discuss your concerns further I would recommend that you contact their Patient Advice and Liaison Service in the first instance, as they will be able to talk you through the options for dental phobia and respond to the issues you have raised. They can be contacted on 01743 277689 or via their website at http://www.shropscommunityhealth.nhs.uk/rte.asp?id=10350
