"My son's treatment"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has problems with his feet.

The consultant that we went to see, was rude, bad mannered and very abrupt. We received a letter from the hospital to tell us and the doctor of what happened at the consultation, which made me more upset.

The consultant said that we were pushing very hard for a surgical solution.....we never mentioned anything of the sort.

My son was in his school shoes, and the consultant looked at them and said it would help your feet in your wore proper shoes, with a proper toe cap and did his laces up. Now in my opinion he was just going on my sons school shoes, he did not ask what other type of shoes my son wore. Also in the letter he said that I do not think that (my son) himself was terribly impressed with this.

His manner and attitude was a total disgrace and with working on a childrens ward I would expect this to be alot better. At one point the consultant looked at my son and said rather nastily in my opinion......I would be very happy to break your toes!

I took my son to see the doctor recently and took the letter down, as I really wanted a second opinion. He is now going to send a letter to a different department to look at the way my son walks.

I have never complained about anything before in my life, but this consultant needs to have a few lessons in how to speak to people, especially children.

Dear Sir/ Madam

Thank you for getting in touch to share your concerns over your son’s appointment. I was really disappointed to read how let down you felt by the attitude and behaviour of a member of our staff. The behaviour that you describe does sound unacceptably rude, I am sorry - I can assure you this is not what we would expect from anyone working for Northumbria Healthcare.

We take your comments very seriously indeed, however, it is very difficult to take this any further for you with so little information of when you visited and without any details regarding your son or the Consultant you saw. It would be very helpful if you could contact me directly so that I can try to resolve this for you. You can contact me at annie.laverty@northumbria.nhs.uk

Kind regards

Annie
